Blog Post #7: Retrospective - 3,000 Too Many (2007)

Updated: Aug 4

To commemorate my start as a filmmaker 15 years ago, I am sharing a retrospective series of write-ups dedicated to my past short film work that includes brief commentary for each short film as well as a few "fun facts" about their creation.

6/16. 3,000 Too Many (2007)

On January 18th, 2007, a group of students from the University of Central Florida took part in a staged funeral procession, marching to a nearby army recruitment center, in protest of the U.S. occupation of Iraq which has claimed the lives of 3,000 U.S. soldiers since 2003.

My second political vignette capturing a protest march organized, in part, by a student political organization I was a proud member of, Students for a Democratic Society (sds), during my time at UCF.

Marching down Alafaya Trail amid traffic was totally improvised!

Fun Facts:

• At 1:13, a student soldier walks across frame as mock coffins pass in the background and as the names of deceased, student-age troops are read aloud. Lucky timing.

• At 1:20, a student is seen languidly placing a symbolic diploma in one of the mock coffins. This student's father was one of the 3,000 soldiers killed in Iraq.

Festivals & Awards:

• Official Selection at the Slow Film Festival in Hungary, 2007
