Blog Post #239: The Mighty Purgatorius!

Writer: Gabriel RhenalsGabriel Rhenals

More than any artist, philosopher, poet or other accomplished creative human being, my primary inspiration as a filmmaker is Purgatorius (see illustration below).

Why these furry, diminutive early primates? Because they were one of the few mammalian species able to adapt to and survive the K-Pg extinction event which wiped out 3/4ths of the earth's animal and plant life 66 million years ago; including the seemingly almighty dinosaurs. It's also worth noting that their kind led to the arrival of a particularly intelligent race of hairless bipeds millions of years later.

I'm reminded of my curious affinity for these unassuming creatures whenever I read about the preponderance of multimillion dollar films that flop or barely break even at the box office; stifling or flat-out ending the careers of so many earnest but misguided practitioners in an industry that can best be described as self-deluding and obsolescent.

Long live the spirit of Purgatorius!
